A Child's Perspective: Favorite Adventure Fridays

Gary suggested this month that we include a series of post from the kids' perspective. Allowing them to share their favorite Adventure Fridays so far. We have been on 31 adventures this school year, not counting our trips with co-op. So we wondered what the kids would rank as their top choices. Read on for their input on places and events we should do again.

I have two favorite trails.

My favorite trail was the Nature Trail at Cary State Forest, because it was so pretty. I enjoyed walking through the water. It was fun to splash and run through. There were three different parts of the trail. There was the boardwalk with high water and swampy plants. Then there was the open scrub with little scrub palms mixed with tall pine trees. Then there was my favorite part where the trail went through high water while the grasses were taller than me on both sides. I hope we go back and camp there.

My other favorite trail was the Bluffton Interpretive Trail at Lake George State Forest because we also got to hike through water. I liked how there was an orange tree. That was cool even though we couldn't eat the oranges yet because it was green. I ate some of one, but it tasted very, very sour. There was a small and cute waterfall going across the trail when we started. I also liked reading about the trees and plants on the path, that was fun. The only bad part was lots and lots of mosquitoes, but I liked that too because it was different. I liked the hardwood area where there were lots of shady trees.

My favorite Adventure Friday was going to the Children's Museum at Bonnet Springs Park in Lakeland. I enjoyed that we went with our friends Ben and Dakota, it made it even more fun to play at the museum having friends with us. First, we looked around in the Discovery Center. I built a two story house while Leah played with the magnets beside me. After that, we all went upstairs, where I mostly played in the home area making supper for Britt and Ben while they ran around and got arrested. At first they were sheriffs but then they were firemen, and then they got arrested by Dakota who was also a cop, because they ran over Ruth three times and she hobbled around on crutches. Next I explored the instrument room with Ruth, we were very chaotic in there. Before we left for the playground I ran a shop with Britt and Ben, but we had a lot of thefts, mainly Ruth. At the end, me, Britt, and Ben played with swords at the playground. I would definitely recommend visiting there.

My favorite Adventure Friday was going to Ichetucknee Springs State Park. It was really interesting being there, where the water was so different. Racing down the water was tons of fun. I also enjoyed taking underwater pictures with the camera, even though it didn't turn out as clear as I had hoped. Then we went over to the Blue Hole, and it was cool to swim in. It was so cold, but we got use to it. We dove down to see things near the bottom, and then there were large fish swimming with us as well. It was eerie but cool to swim over the hole itself and see so far down into the caverns below. It was also really special that our friends came with us to spend the day. It made it so much more fun.

I can't pick between two favorites.

My favorite Adventure Friday so far has been our visit to the Children's Museum at Bonnet Springs Park in Lakeland. I really like it because of the nice playground space. There are hilly areas, nice swings, and also there are a unique type of Merry Go Round. In the Museum itself Ben and I enjoyed making a war chariot in the Discovery zone. It was the greatest war chariot ever made. It was also alot of fun trying out the different jobs in the job section. We were cops, firefighters, and country salesmen.

Tied for my favorite Adventure Friday was when we went horseback riding with Cactus Jacks'. Ivan was a very cooperative horse and he didn't try to snack along the trail even once. I enjoyed seeing a different view from normal, being so high up we could see much farther. It was cool seeing the different types of horses from Percherons like Big Belle to Quarter Horses like Chunky. I also enjoyed hearing the stories about the horses. Ivan was an old polo horse and use to running everywhere he went, so he loved being retired and getting to walk the trails. It was as fun as I had hoped it would be.

Final Summary

For the final count our favorite Adventure Friday destinations included Cary State Forest, Lake George State Forest, The Children's Museum at Bonnet Springs (received two votes), Ichetucknee Springs State Park, and Cactus Jack's Trail Rides. Tune back in next week to see which Adventure Fridays the kids felt like they learned the most from.
