One Tank Trips: Ross Prairie State Forest

If you recall from our first camping trip of the year, we had originally intended to camp at Ross Prairie State Forest and then do some geocaching at the adjacent state park. However, it didn't work out as it was a camping spot that we had to hike too. But mid April we finally made it over to the park to hike the Holly Hammock Trail.

All of today's pictures were courtesy of Kate.

Kate enjoyed the park more than anyone. There were numerous dead trees along the trail, and because she likes the way that they look stretched out to the sky, she stopped to take lots of pictures. She was very eager for me to share them with Sis. Lesile who also enjoys pictures of dead trees. It took me a couple of months to get around to it, but I eventually did.

Dead Tree

Ross Prairie is a beautiful but isolated area just around an hour north of us. The Holly Hammock trail was very pretty with Holly trees sprinkled along the trail (hence the name). We didn't see any wildlife the day we were there. Of course it was also early afternoon and a bit hot that day with no breeze. However, since 90% of the trail is wooded we made out just fine.

However we did really enjoy spotting several different kinds of fungi and mushrooms on this nature walk. We got a few very up close pictures and were amazed at the color and detail that each individual specimen showcased. It reminded us what an incredible God we serve to see his handiwork in even the most minute details. Created just for his glory in places humans seldom even see.

As all reports indicated, it was a really nice trail and a beautiful area to explore. We would definitely recommend it and would like to visit again during the wet season, to see another side of the park. We'd also like to go back to the Ross Prairie State Park in order to do some geocaching and perhaps RV camp in their campground. If you'd like to make a trip the address to the state forest is Florida 200, Dunnellon, Florida. The park is open from sunrise to sunset, every day of the week. Of course, you can always call for more information at 352-732-1779. Entrance to the Park is $2 a vehicle.
